Overview

Cash Deposit at Retailers

Worked with our internal development team and multiple vendors to build out a cash deposit solution in our app. The timeline from kickoff to launch was 1 month.

In the first month of use, members deposited over $2 million, with an average deposit  $100 over the industry average.

Our challenge

In June 2025, Civic Federal Credit Union merged with its sister credit union, LGFCU. As part of the transition, incoming members were losing access to a large branch network, which raised concerns about how they would deposit cash. To prepare for this change, we began exploring solutions several months before the merger, working closely with internal teams and external vendors to enable cash deposits at retail locations that members already knew and trusted.

Our goals

  • Provide members with a cash deposit solution integrated within the Civic mobile app.
  • Deliver the feature ahead of the merger deadline, allowing just four weeks for design, development, and testing.

Solution

I had just one week to design the initial flow, working closely with developers to refine the experience as we moved into implementation. The design also required approval from the vendor’s UX team, so I began by reviewing their existing case studies and used them as a foundation.

I used Figma to create and collaborate with internal teams throughout the process. On the entry screen, I designed a visual map featuring retail partner logos, helping users quickly identify nearby locations for cash deposits. From there, I laid out a simple, step-by-step experience:

1. Find and select a retail location
2. Choose the account to deposit the cash into
3. Generate a barcode for the cashier to scan
4. Hand the cashier the cash

The barcode expires after 15 minutes, prompting the user to generate a new one if needed. Once the transaction is complete, users receive a detailed summary of the transaction.

Problems

Although I initially anticipated the tight timeline would be a major hurdle, the team moved quickly and efficiently to meet the deadline. A challenge we faced was the lack of dedicated frontend developer support. This made the design handoff more complex, but through close collaboration with the available developers, I was able to guide the implementation and ensure the final product aligned with the intended design.

Metrics

Member feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, confirming that the solution met a real need. In the first month alone, members deposited over $2 million, with the average deposit amount exceeding the industry average by more than $100. Despite Civic’s North Carolina-based membership, we saw usage across 16 states—including deposits as far away as Alaska—highlighting the value of providing nationwide access. And because the service is available during retail store hours, members now have the flexibility to deposit cash at times that work best for them.
